The emergency contraceptive pill (after pill) can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sexual intercourse, such as contraception failure (condoms break or come off), or if you have been sexually assaulted. The chance of preventing a pregnancy is not 100%, but the earlier you take it, the higher the chance of stopping it.

The stopping rate is 95% when taken in the first 24 hours after sex, 85% between 25-48 hours and 58% between 49-72 hours. The medication we prescribe is 1.5 mg in Norlevo tablets or 1.5 mg in Levonorgestrel tablets (corresponding to the LNG group shown below).
